And the most depressing collection of New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014 goes to…
I’ll get an enormous hate for saying this, i know. Alexander Wang is the most overrated designer today.
I labeled the collection as “the most depressing”. Why? Cause i am depressed. And you should too.
When i clicked thru the collection for the first time, i can’t stand it after 15 seconds. What is this. What’s happening. Some urban sporty chic show? Some logomania trend? Oh. My. God. No. I don’t even care about the laser cut things he does for the outfits. I know an Antwerp Academy fresh graduate who used laser cut on his graduation show and believe me that is way better than this. I can’t get the point where you have to cut your name all over the place and put a “Parental Advisory” t-shirts for fun.
And don’t. Don’t even came to me and said “This is not Balenciaga, this is Alexander Wang. And this is exactly why his Alexander Wang customers like him. Cool, chic streetwears. This isn’t big french fashion house.” Don’t. This isn’t about Alexander Wang VS Balenciaga. This is about Alexander Wang’s limit. The problem for me is not the level of design used at Wang’s label vs. Balenciaga, it’s that the level of design shown at his own label is actually his limit. He doesn’t actually exceed it designing for Balenciaga. I don’t think it’s valid that a designer not push themselves just because they are designing for a different market. You can be innovative and fresh when doing street wear or cheaper clothes if you’re a good designer. Marc Jacobs does a good job in Louis Vuitton and did he decided to be lazy, minimalizing his effort for his own label? No. Did Karl does it? No.
If this is something that someone who’s currently at the helm of Balenciaga showing, then me myself, is truly depressed.
